WHERE

Barton-upon-Humber

What it’s like

Free trails through reed beds and along the Humber foreshore, two play areas and a café overlooking the pond.

This one's built around walking, watching and pottering rather than a single big attraction. The accessible trails loop through reed beds, round ponds and along the Humber foreshore, and there are two outdoor play areas to break up the walk if you've got legs that tire faster than yours do. The visitor centre has interactive displays and a live bird box camera, which is a nice thing to point at on a grey day when the mud outside looks less appealing.

Entry's free, which makes it an easy one to fold into a morning without weighing up whether it's worth the money. There's no booking needed either, so you can just turn up and see how far the trails take you. Opening hours shift with the seasons, closing at 4.30pm in summer and 4pm the rest of the year, with weekends running a slightly shorter 10 to 4.

Craft sessions run regularly, and the calendar fills out further with wildlife days, classic car shows and heritage open days. The Humber Hideaway Café overlooks the main pond and does homemade meals, which is a decent spot to sit down once the trail walking's caught up with everyone.

It's an outdoor visit through and through, so wet weather means wet paths rather than a wasted trip, but the visitor centre gives you somewhere dry to duck into. Wheelchair access and bike parking are both there if either matters to your journey there.
