What it’s like

A country park with a proper playground, free-roaming alpacas and donkeys, an aviary of rescued owls, and two old lakes to walk round.

The playground is the sort with an endurance course as well as swings and slides, so it's not a quick five minutes on the way past. Once that's done there's a proper wander to be had: alpacas, donkeys, rabbits and guinea pigs to look at, peacocks and ducks wandering about, and an aviary with budgies, rare pheasants and rescued owls. Over Easter there's a lambing shed too, if your visit lines up with it.

The arboretum and the two lakes are the bit that slows the pace down, good for when the kids have had enough of the playground and you fancy an actual walk. It's all outdoor, and the park's honest that it's open weather permitting, so a proper downpour might change the plan. Bring a sturdy pushchair rather than your lightest one, as some paths are rougher going.

Admission's £8 for an adult and £6.50 for a child, or £28 for a family of two adults and three children, which works out fairer than paying one by one if you've got the numbers. There's no need to book ahead. Parking's free and there's space for over a hundred cars, which takes one worry off the list.

Dogs aren't allowed beyond guide and support animals, because of the free-roaming animals around the park, so leave the family dog at home. Wheelchair access is described as mostly fine with some rougher sections, and staff can point out the easiest routes if you ask when you arrive.

Roughly 10am to 5pm in spring and summer, and 10am to 4pm in autumn and winter.

Can we bring the dog?
