What it’s like

Woodland, ruins and four bridges over the river Stiffkey to lob sticks off, with snowdrops carpeting the ground in early spring.

This is grounds and ruins rather than a hands-on museum, so the real activity is wandering. The site lists swathes of naturalised snowdrops in the woodland in early spring, which by all accounts is the moment to time a visit for. The rest of the year it's green lawns, shady spots and woodland to poke about in, plus four bridges over the river Stiffkey that were made for Pooh sticks.

There's no playground, so this suits kids who are happy exploring rather than needing equipment to climb on, which is roughly why the admission ages start at 6. Entry is £7.50 for an adult and £3 for a child normally, dropping to £2.63 for children in the summer 2026 window from 25th June to 1st September. That covers the abbey grounds, the ruins and the Shirehall Museum too.

Opening is daily 11am to 4pm from 27th March through to 1st November, with a few extra March weekends open as well. Worth knowing the grounds can close in high winds, especially over winter, so it's not a guaranteed all-weather outing in that season. On-site facilities are currently closed for building works, which is a bit of a faff if you were counting on them.

There's no parking on site. The nearest is Mill Car Park, a two-minute walk away, and it's card payment only: £2.50 for two hours, £4 for four, £7 for the full day. Dogs on leads are welcome.
