Volk's Electric Railway
WHERE
Brighton
What it’s like
A mile-long ride along Brighton seafront on genuine Victorian electric trains, stopping near a crazy golf course on the way.
This is the oldest operating electric railway anywhere, and it still runs the way you'd hope: open little carriages trundling along the seafront from Aquarium Station, past Halfway Station, down to Black Rock near the marina. A Halfway hop takes about 5 minutes, the full single is 12, and if you go there and back you're looking at up to half an hour. You can break the journey at any station and reboard later, which is handy if Halfway Station happens to be right next to Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf and its café.
There's no booking this one, you just turn up at a station and buy a ticket when you fancy a ride, with trains on the hour and half-past for groups. That's fine on a quiet Tuesday but worth bearing in mind if you're picturing a guaranteed slot on a busy August weekend. Food and drink on board is allowed as long as you take your rubbish with you, and the Milkbar Café at Aquarium Station is open all year for the days the railway itself isn't running.
The one real snag is the heritage cars themselves. They're small and old by design, so pushchairs have to be folded before you board, unfolded wheelchairs and mobility scooters don't fit, and there's a small gap between train and platform at every stop, even though the stations are all step free. Dogs ride free on a lead, so it's an easy one to bring the family dog along to as well as the kids.
It only runs from the Easter holidays through to the end of September, so this is very much a summer plan rather than a year-round one. Parking near Aquarium Station is limited and there's nothing on-site, so if you're driving in it's worth building in a bit of time to find a space on Madeira Drive.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost and can we book ahead?
There's no advance or online booking, you just turn up at Aquarium, Halfway or Black Rock Station and buy a ticket on the day.
How long does a ride take?
A Halfway journey is about 5 minutes, a full single from Aquarium to Black Rock is around 12 minutes, and a full return can take up to 30 minutes.
When does it run?
Seven days a week from the Brighton and Hove school Easter holidays until 30 September. Outside that window it doesn't operate.

Can we eat on the train?
Yes, food and drink are fine on board as long as you keep it tidy and take any litter with you.
Is there parking nearby?
There's no parking on-site, just limited public parking along Madeira Drive near Aquarium Station, run by the council.
Can we bring the dog?
Dogs ride free as long as they're on a lead.
