Vault Artist Studios & Gallery - Bedford Street
WHERE
Belfast
What it’s like
Workshops in sculpture, mosaic and set dancing at an artist-run gallery, though you'll need to arrange your visit first.
This is a working artist studio and gallery, not a drop-in visitor attraction, and the workshops on offer are properly hands-on. There's a Gargoyles and Grotesques sculpture session, table-top mosaic, family crest design and even modern set dancing, plus a 3D art workshop covering modelling, sculpting and animation. It's the sort of place where you make something rather than just look at it, which is the appeal if your kids are past the point of being happy just wandering a gallery.
The catch is that it isn't regularly open to the public. Visits and workshops run by arrangement, so this is one to sort ahead rather than turn up on a whim expecting to walk in. Once you're in, the gallery and ground floor spaces have wheelchair access via ramps and accessible doors, though the building's front doors have to be opened manually and the lobby isn't staffed, so calling ahead for help getting in is worth doing if that matters to you.
Getting there without a car is easy enough. Botanic train station is about six minutes on foot, Grand Central Station around ten minutes, and there are City Hall bus stops five minutes away. Driving is less convenient: there's no free parking at the Bedford Street site itself, so you're looking at on-street spaces on Bankmore Street, which get busy, or one of the nearby paid car parks.
