What it’s like
An 18+ session where you throw real axes at wooden targets, with a coach in your lane and your own playlist running.
This one's strictly for the grown-ups. You need to be 18 or over to throw, and spectators have to be adults too, so it's not a stop on the family day out circuit, more an evening out or a work do that fancies something different.
Once you're in, you get an enclosed lane with a dedicated coach, sometimes called an "axepert", making sure everyone throws properly and nobody's in danger of anything but a bruised ego. You get a full hour, and one nice touch is that you become DJ for your session and build your own playlist, which beats whatever's piped through the speakers elsewhere. It's £46 for two throwers sharing a target, £23 for each extra person.
Bookings need to go in at least 24 hours ahead with full payment upfront, and there's no walk-in option, so this isn't something you can decide to do on a whim on the way past. Turn up 10 to 15 minutes early too, because public sessions start on time and latecomers risk being left out entirely, which feels harsh but is the rule. Wear flat, closed shoes, since open toes aren't allowed near flying axes, and leave the alcohol until after, as anyone who turns up under the influence gets turned away with no refund.
There's free parking on site and the venue is ground level throughout, so wheelchair users can take part or watch without any bother. Hot and cold drinks plus traybakes and snacks are available if you want to refuel after your throws, and they can sort catering for bigger events too.
