What it’s like

Pantomimes, musicals and behind-the-scenes tours in a proper old theatre, with bars open before curtain up.

This is a working theatre rather than an attraction built for kids, so what's on offer changes with the programme: pantomime season, musicals, drama, family shows. If you want to see how it all works, there are behind-the-scenes tours on Thursdays and Saturdays at midday, an hour long, £12.50 a head.

Under-fours are the thing to check before you book. They're not allowed into the auditorium unless a specific performance says otherwise, though they're welcome in the foyer, so a pantomime trip with a very small one might mean taking turns. Every child needs their own seat they can sit in unaided, and anyone under 16 has to be with an adult the whole time they're in the building.

Bars open an hour before the show and run through to the end of the interval, with crisps, nuts and sweets alongside the drinks. You can't bring in your own food or drink from outside, and no glass containers either, which is a fair enough rule but worth knowing if you'd planned a picnic tea beforehand.

There's no parking on site, just public car parks a short walk away, most of them running on RingGo. If access matters, they've got wheelchair positions in the auditorium and stalls access via the rear entrance, and they'll take a booking call for that on the Box Office number. For anyone who prefers a gentler show, there are sensory-friendly performances with lower sound and the frightening bits softened, and you're free to get up and move about during those.

Plan your visit

Can under-fours come to a show?

Only if that particular performance says it allows children under four. Otherwise they're welcome in the foyer but not the auditorium.

How much are the theatre tours and when do they run?

£12.50 per person, about an hour long, Thursdays and Saturdays at midday. They depend on the rehearsal and performance schedule so can move around.

Is there parking at the theatre?

Not on site. There are public car parks a few minutes' walk away, mostly council-run and paid through RingGo.

Can we bring our own snacks in?

External food and drink isn't allowed, except water, and glass containers aren't permitted either. The bars open an hour before the performance if you want something there instead.

Does a child need their own ticket and seat?

Yes, and they need to be able to sit in it unaided. Anyone under 16 has to have an adult with them throughout.
