What it’s like

Residential camp weekends and holidays for 8 to 18s, with a 30 metre water slide, human hamster balls and a campfire to finish the night.

This is a stay-over camp, not a day visit, so pack a bag rather than a picnic. Campers eight and up take on the 3D pentagonal climbing wall, drive the Oakes cars round the grounds, and get stuck into team challenges with names like Stargate and Acid River that sound more daunting than they probably are. In summer there's a 30 metre water slide and rafting to go with it, plus human hamster balls that look like the bit everyone talks about afterwards.

Evenings wind down with a campfire and singing, and there's an underground tuck shop for anyone who's saved their pocket money. Camps run over weekends and school holidays, usually starting at 7pm and finishing at 4pm, and the price covers all the food and activities once you're there, so there's no extra spending needed beyond the tuck shop.

There's a £30 deposit per camper to secure a place, and it's worth knowing upfront that it's non-refundable, whatever the reason for cancelling. Communication with your child while they're on camp is limited, which some parents find odd if they're used to a daily check-in, but the team runs the whole programme so any visiting group leaders can just focus on the kids rather than logistics. Allergies and dietary needs are taken seriously, with alternatives provided, and there are trained first aiders on site including for medication.
