What it’s like
Costumes from the 1770s, old farming gear and a riverside walk to stretch legs after the cases.
This one's a slower visit, built around a costume collection that goes back to the 1770s, shown on a rotation so it's not the same cases every time. Alongside it you've got the country life and farming heritage side, all the old tools and kit that tell you how Ayrshire actually worked the land. It's not hands-on in the way a soft play or farm park is, so it suits kids who'll happily look and ask questions rather than ones who need something to climb on.
Under-5s go in free, which is a decent nod to families with a toddler in tow who might only manage half the rooms anyway. Beyond that it's £5 a child, £10 an adult, or £25 for two adults and up to four kids, which works out fair if you've got a bigger crew. Last entry's 3pm, and the whole place shuts at 4pm most days, 11am start on a Sunday if you fancy a lie-in first.
When you've had enough of the cases there's a riverside walk outside, good for getting some air between rooms, and the home-made café does light lunches, soups and cakes if you time your visit round a meal. The building's wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet and blue badge parking.
It's shut on Mondays, so don't turn up expecting to sneak in on your day off.
