What it’s like

A proper theatre stage in Leeds putting on family shows and film festivals for kids from about age three up.

Family shows here are aimed squarely at younger kids, with something like The Littlest Yak pitched at ages 3 and up, so it's a decent first taste of a real theatre rather than a soft play with actors in. Expect a proper auditorium, a proper stage, and a bit of hush before curtain up that some three-year-olds handle better than others.

The Ocean Film Festival tickets sit at £19.80 standard, £17.60 for concessions and groups of 6 or more, which is a fair whack for a family outing once you've added a couple of kids on. There's no booking fee if the event is run directly by Leeds City Council, but a 10% fee turns up on everything else.

If you're bringing a school group or need extra carers along, group bookings go through the Leeds Ticket Hub rather than the venue itself, which is one more phone call but usually means a discount at the other end. Blue badge parking is on Cookridge Street nearby, and there are several paid multi-storey car parks around if you're driving in. It's also an easy walk from Leeds train station, about ten minutes, so the train is the less stressful option if you can manage it with a buggy.

Older kids aren't left out either. There's a young theatre makers programme for ages 11 to 18, split into a younger group on Thursday evenings and an older one straight after, running through term time with a proper devising and rehearsal structure rather than just a drama club vibe.
