Observatories & Planetariums in Leeds

There isn't a big domed planetarium in Leeds itself, but there's real stargazing not far off. Huddersfield Observatory, about 27 km out, opens up its solar telescopes and star talks for £3, with a members' society running beginner astronomy courses twice a month. Out at Pontefract, roughly 22 km from the centre, the West Yorkshire Astronomical Society runs free open nights with planetarium shows and telescope observing, kept in small groups so everyone actually gets a turn. The Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds itself, from £17.60, isn't astronomy as such but does family shows and film festivals for kids from age three. If you want free and hands-on, Pontefract is the one to book. If you fancy a proper look through a telescope with some structure to it, Huddersfield's £3 sessions suit younger kids too, since there's no minimum age. Just remember Pontefract needs booking ahead, and the astronomical societies only run on set dates, not every night.
