What it’s like
Axe throwing, archery and airgun ranges under one roof, with live fire assault rifles for the over-14s who make the height.
Most of what happens here is throwing and shooting things at targets, and there's a lot of it: axes, airguns, airsoft, compound bows, crossbows, Nerf, archery tag, plus a target challenge and remote controlled car racing. The soft axe range takes plastic axes, which is the version to point a smaller kid at if they're tagging along with an older sibling. Sessions run an hour, with 15 minutes between slots, which is about right before arms get tired.
The live fire assault rifle shooting is the one to save for last, and it's the one with the strictest rules: age 14 and 5ft minimum. Everything else needs age 11 and 4ft 6in, so this isn't a place for younger children at all. If you've got a 12-year-old who's tall for their age, they'll get the axes, the bows and the airguns but not the rifles. Fifty extra rounds cost £20, bought at the end of your session if the instructor agrees and there's time left.
Book ahead, and book for at least two people, because single bookings aren't allowed. Turn up 15 minutes early: the site says sat navs underestimate the trip and late arrivals aren't admitted or refunded. Parking is a dedicated onsite car park on a first come, first served basis, and the site admits it can be a challenge. Roadworks at Gallows Corner are affecting access, and they're currently directing people in via M25 junction 28 then the A12. Closed toe shoes and tied-back hair are required for axe throwing. It's an alcohol-free site and anyone who's been drinking can't take part.
On food, you can pre-order savoury party platters, with cakes, chocolate bars, crisps and soft drinks sold on site. If you're booking for a group, 6 to 12 people is their speciality and they'll try to fit you in if you call or email. There's also a children's axe throwing party option: two hours, a private area for 30, and 90 minutes of throwing for 12 participants, with a minimum age of 8. You bring your own food and decorations for that. Wednesdays knock 50% off selected activities, which is worth knowing if you can go midweek.
