What it’s like

A grand house full of gilded rooms plus a glass-domed conservatory and gardens to wander round afterwards.

The main event is the house itself, room after room of the sort of interiors that make you lower your voice without meaning to. On Sundays and bank holidays you wander at your own pace and chat to the room guides, but on Mondays and Tuesdays it switches to timed guided tours with the last one at 2pm, so if your lot won't sit still for a guide, aim for a Sunday.

Once you're out the other side, the Great Conservatory is the bit worth saving for last, a nineteenth century glass dome full of exotic plants that feels like a different building entirely. The gardens and arboretum are big enough for a proper wander, and you can do just the gardens and conservatory without the house if you'd rather keep costs down and the kids loose outdoors.

It stings a bit on price. House tickets are £16.50 for an adult and £9.50 for a child online, with a family ticket at £49 on the door, and booking online saves you £1 a head over turning up. The gardens-only option is far kinder at £7 for an adult and £3.50 for a child. There's a Courtyard Restaurant for a proper sit-down meal and the Clocktower Café for a coffee and something sweet, plus a large free car park on site.

One genuine downside: the house has no wheelchair access at all, with eight stone steps at the entrance and more stairs inside, and there's no wheelchair hire to fall back on. It's also seasonal, open mid-March to the end of October, so this isn't a winter fixture.
