What it’s like
A college theatre in Street showing family films, live stage shows and opera broadcasts, with box office tickets bought by phone, post or in person.
Films, live shows and Metropolitan Opera broadcasts on the big screen all turn up here, so what you actually get depends on what's on that week. A £5 film ticket is a decent price for an afternoon out, and the Live on Screen opera broadcasts at £16.50 are the pricier end, more of a treat than a regular outing.
Booking isn't done through a simple online click and go. You can book by phone, in person at the box office, by post, or online, and if you want tickets in hand before the day you'll pay a £1.50 postal fee unless you send a stamped addressed envelope. Refunds aren't really a thing here either, standard theatre practice apparently, though there's a small cancellation charge if a sold-out show gets resold.
Film age ratings are enforced properly, with photo ID checks for 12a, 15 and 18 certificates, so don't expect any wriggle room if your teenager looks younger than they are. Babes in arms under 18 months only get in for family shows, which is worth knowing if you're hoping to bring a very small one along to the cinema screenings.
There's a café on site, step-free access, an accessible toilet and a hearing loop, which all helps. The one real snag is the main theatre balcony has no lift, and wheelchair spaces in the theatre or studio have to be sorted through the box office rather than booked online.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
Film tickets are around £5. The Live on Screen opera broadcasts are pricier, £16.50 a ticket.
How do we book?
By phone, in person at the box office, by post, or online. There's no separate booking link, you go through the theatre's own box office.
Can we get tickets posted to us?
Yes, for a £1.50 fee, or print at home instead. Send a stamped self-addressed envelope and they'll waive the postage charge.
Is there parking?
There's one disabled space and seven regular spaces opposite the main entrance, but buses can block them on term-time afternoons. You can't book a space in advance.
What about wheelchair access?
Three spaces in the main theatre stalls and two in the Studio front row, each with a companion seat, but you need to contact the box office directly to book rather than doing it online. There's no lift to the balcony in the main theatre.
Can we bring a baby?
Babes in arms up to 18 months are only admitted for family shows, not for film screenings.
Are there discounts for kids?
Concessions apply to children 16 and under, along with over-sixties, students and people on state benefits, but you need to show proof.
