What it’s like

Sleep in a pod or bell tent by the lake, with fishing pegs to book and a hot tub option if you want to push the boat out.

This is a stay rather than a day trip, and the pitch is simple: pods, bell tents and, if you fancy it, a hot tub version of either, set on a farm with its own fishing lake. Book a peg in advance through Swimbooker and bring your own tackle and licence, and that's your morning sorted before anyone's even had breakfast. It's self-catering, so pack food and drink, though there's a food van on site at weekends and school holidays doing breakfast and evening meals if you'd rather not cook.

None of the pods or bell tents have electricity or heating built in, which is worth knowing before you commit to a "heated" pod, since that just means it's insulated rather than wired up. There's electricity in the nearby lodge if you need to charge something, and battery packs are available to hire for £5 if you'd rather not trek over there. Prices move around depending on when you go: a standard pod starts at £60 off peak, and a hot tub bell tent at peak time will run you £189, so it pays to think about which nights you actually need.

Bring your own bedding, because that's the one camping essential they don't provide. Dogs are welcome in the pods for a fiver a night each, though bell tents are dog-free, and there's free parking a short walk from the accommodation. Check in for pods runs from 2pm to 8pm, bell tents from 3pm, and checkout is fairly early at 11am for pods and 10.30am for bell tents.

The noise curfew from 9:30pm and the ban on sitting outside past 11pm tells you this is a quieter, family-and-couples setup rather than a group weekend away, and large or single-sex groups aren't allowed at all. If you're arriving on a Bank Holiday Friday or Saturday, you'll need to book at least two nights. A free birthday package with balloons and marshmallows is a nice touch if someone in your party has a birthday to mark.

Worth knowing
Free birthday package with stay including balloons, banners, marshmallows and sparklers
  • No sitting outside past 11pm and a 9:30pm noise curfew, so it suits a quieter stay rather than a big group weekend
  • Bank Holiday Friday or Saturday arrivals need a minimum two-night stay
  • Bell tents don't allow pets at all, even though pods do for £5 a dog per night
  • Sat nav postcodes can miss the actual entrance, so it's worth getting proper directions before you set off
  • Nearest train station, Kirkham & Wesham, is about a 10 minute taxi ride away

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

A standard pod starts at £60 off peak, rising to £70 at peak times. Heated pods run £70 to £80, family heated pods £85 to £100, bell tents £85 to £135, and hot tub options £169 to £189 depending on the pod or tent and the season.

Do we need to book?

Yes, and prices change depending on how busy it is, so weekends, bank holidays and school holidays cost more than an off peak midweek stay.

What time can we check in and out?

Pods check in from 2pm to 8pm and check out by 11am. Bell tents check in from 3pm to 8pm and check out by 10.30am. Early check in from 12pm and late checkout until 12pm can both be added for a fee when booking directly.

Is there electricity in the pods or bell tents?

No, none of them have power. The nearby lodge has electricity, and you can hire a battery pack for £5 if you need to charge a phone.

What do we need to bring?

Everything you'd normally take camping except the tent itself, most importantly your own bedding and your own food and drink.

Can we go fishing?

You need to book a peg in advance through Swimbooker, and bring your own equipment and a fishing licence.

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs can stay in the pods for £5 per dog per night, kept on a lead and never left unattended. They're not allowed in the bell tents, though guide dogs go free.

Is there food on site?

It's self-catering, but there's a food van on site at weekends and during school holidays serving breakfast and evening food.

Is there parking?

Free parking on site, and the most you'd walk to your pod or tent is around 30 seconds.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

There are wheelchair accessible pods with ramp access and wider doorways, and accessible toilets with grab bars. Pod 21 is allocated as it's nearest the facilities.

Can we book more than one pod or tent together?

Book more than one and they'll be placed together, up to a maximum of three.

Is there anything for a birthday?

A free birthday package is included with a stay, with balloons, banners, marshmallows and sparklers.
