What it’s like

Free lake with ducks and swans to feed, plus a dog-free playground so toddlers can wander without a lead getting underfoot.

The lake is the main event here, ducks and swans drifting about while your kids point and shout from the path. The playground next to it is dog-free, which is a small thing until you've tried to keep a two-year-old away from someone's excitable spaniel. It's free to get in, no booking, so it works as a proper drop-everything outing rather than something you have to plan around.

There's a café on site, The Bake Box, doing baked goods, ice creams and coffees, open seven days from 9am to 5pm, though they say the hours can shift with the weather. Toilets are open daily 8am to 6pm and there's an accessible one too.

Two things to know before you go. The car park is currently closed for building works, which is a genuine faff if you were planning to drive straight in. And there have been suspected cases of avian botulism in the lake.

The park stays open right over Christmas, including Christmas Day, if you need somewhere to escape to after too much time indoors.
