What it’s like
An adults-only community choir where you learn rock and pop songs in four part harmony and perform at local charity events.
This one's for the grown-ups. Solent Glee Club is an 18-plus community choir built around favourite rock and pop songs, arranged into four part harmony rather than the usual choral fare. You'll learn a set over a ten week term and some of it ends up performed at local and charity events, so there's an actual goal to work towards rather than just turning up and singing into the void.
You can't just show up and join. They want you to book a taster session first, try it out, and if you love it they'll email you the details on becoming a full member. That's a sensible way to do it given the cost: lifetime membership is £18 and gets you a t-shirt and access to rehearsal tracks, but the real spend is the ten week term at £116, taken as £29 a month by direct debit. That's a proper commitment, not a drop-in hobby, and it stings a bit more when you realise there are three terms a year to keep paying into.
Terms are timed loosely around local school holidays. Each choir has its own timing, and term dates are worth pinning down once you've decided which one suits, since they're not all on the same schedule.
