What it’s like
Free to wander round, with lion sculptures to hunt down and a guided tour if you want the real story of the building.
Getting in costs nothing, which is the first thing worth knowing. You can just walk in and look round on your own, and one of the things kids can actually hunt for is the set of lion sculptures from the Pride of Yorkshire trail dotted about the building. It's a proper old cathedral though, so don't expect climbing frames or noise. This is a quiet-voices, look-up-at-the-ceiling kind of visit.
If you want more than a wander, a guided tour is £5 and runs 45 to 60 minutes, enough to keep most school-age kids interested without losing them halfway through. There's also an After Hours Tour at £12.50 if you fancy seeing it without the daytime crowds, though that's more of a grown-up treat than a toddler outing. For the very young there are Little Lanterns sessions with music and movement, and Diddy Disciples runs during services for children, so there are proper toddler-friendly slots if you time it right rather than just turning up and hoping.
Opening hours shift by day: weekdays from 8:15am to 6pm, Saturdays 9am to 4:30pm, Sundays 7:30am to 5pm, so check which day you're going before you plan around it. There's a café on site and a gift shop, which covers you for a snack and a small souvenir without needing to leave. The building has 13 different levels, which the cathedral itself flags as something that can limit access to some areas.
One genuine catch: there's no on-site parking. You're looking at NCP car parks at either end of Campo Lane, and on a Sunday those close at 5pm, which is worth knowing if you're coming for a longer look around after a service.
