What it’s like
A free wander through ancient woodland with bluebells in spring, grazing animals about, and no set route to stick to.
There's no ticket booth and no set trail here, just ancient woodland to walk through at whatever pace suits you. The bluebells are the obvious reason to time a visit for spring, but the old trees themselves are worth the trip any month, gnarled and properly old in a way you don't get in a managed park.
It's free to get in, which is rare enough these days to mention twice. There's no set visit length either, so a toddler who wants to potter for twenty minutes and a teenager who wants a proper two-hour tramp are both catered for without anyone watching the clock.
The underfoot conditions vary, so this isn't the place for a buggy you're precious about or trainers you want to keep clean. Grazing animals are on site year-round, which is part of the charm but means dogs need to stay on a lead the whole way round, and it's worth keeping small children close for the same reason.
The one real catch is parking. There's none on site, so you'll need to work out where you're leaving the car before you set off rather than assuming there'll be a space waiting.
Need to know
- Parking
- No parking on site
- How long to allow
- Variable. Suitable for walking visits of any length
- Dogs
- On a lead
- Bluebells make spring the best time to visit
- Wear proper shoes, the ground underfoot varies a lot
- Grazing animals are present year-round, so keep an eye on little ones
- No parking on site, plan where you'll leave the car beforehand
Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
Nothing, it's free to walk round.
Do we need to book?
No, there's no booking, you just turn up and walk.
Is there parking on site?
There isn't. You'll need to sort parking somewhere nearby before you arrive.
Can we take the dog?
Yes, but on a lead throughout, mainly because of the grazing animals on site.
How long do people usually stay?
As long as you like. There's no fixed route, so it suits a quick potter or a longer walk equally.
