What it’s like

Ancient beech woodland with Bronze Age burial mounds to find and roe deer to spot, free to wander with no set trail to follow.

This is beech woodland with proper history under the trees. There are Bronze Age burial mounds and the remains of an Iron Age farmstead scattered through it, and the site makes a point of them, so it's worth turning a walk into a bit of a hunt with older kids who like the idea of treasure that's actually just very old bumps in the ground. Roe deer, birds and butterflies are all listed as things you might spot, though obviously the deer won't hang about for you.

There's no waymarked trail here, which is either freeing or a faff depending on your mood and how confident you are with a map. It means you can wander wherever looks interesting, but it also means there's no easy access route, and no designated accessible parking either, so a pushchair or wheelchair day out this isn't.

It's free to get in, and there's a free car park on Northington Lane, which takes the sting out of a spontaneous visit. Bring your own picnic since there's a picnic area but nothing said about food on site, and dogs are welcome off the lead as well as assistance dogs. Toilets are on site too, which is one less thing to plan around.
