What it’s like

A small museum on the site of a Roman cavalry fort, with activities and metal detecting days for kids to get properly stuck into.

This is a museum built where a real Roman cavalry fort once stood, and that's the bit that tends to land with kids. It's not just cases of pottery behind glass, there's history under their actual feet, which makes it easier to get a seven-year-old interested in something Roman for once.

Through the year there are activities laid on for children, and if you time a visit right there are metal detector experience days too, which is the sort of hands-on thing that beats a laminated worksheet any day. Once a year there's a weekend-long Roman festival, and that's probably worth building a visit around if you can, since it sounds like the museum at its liveliest.

Opening hours are straightforward: weekdays 10 till 5, weekends a bit later at 12 till 5. It's a fairly compact visit rather than a whole day out, so it pairs well with a wander round the village afterwards. One thing to watch is the autumn closure, the museum shuts from 22nd September until 4th October 2026, so that stretch is a dead end if you're planning ahead.

Schools use it for visits too.

What do kids actually do there?

They explore the history of the old Roman cavalry fort the museum sits on, and there are activities for children running through the year. Metal detector experience days pop up too, which kids tend to remember.

What are the opening hours?

Monday to Friday it's 10am to 5pm, and weekends it opens a bit later at midday until 5pm.

Do we need to book ahead?

There's no booking link listed, so it sounds like you can just turn up during opening hours.

Is the museum ever closed?

Yes, it shuts from 22nd September until 4th October 2026, so avoid that stretch if you're planning a visit around then.
