WHERE

York

What it’s like

A medieval brick tower on York's old walls that now doubles as a community café and occasional heritage open day spot.

This is one of those bits of York's old defences that most people walk straight past, a squat brick tower that's been repurposed rather than roped off. These days it works as a community café and events space, so instead of peering through a fence you can actually go in, have a sit down and a drink, and get a proper look at the inside of a medieval building rather than just the outside of one.

The other reason to time a visit here is Heritage Open Days, when the tower opens up for a look round beyond the usual café hours. It's run by volunteers though, so the site is upfront that days and hours can shift or get cancelled at short notice if nobody's free to staff it. Worth treating any planned open day visit as a "probably" rather than a definite until you're actually there.

There's a picnic area too, which is handy if you fancy bringing your own lunch rather than relying on the café, and useful if you're combining the tower with a longer wander along the walls themselves. It's a small, quiet stop rather than a big day out on its own, the sort of thing you fold into a walk around the city rather than build a whole afternoon around.

Plan your visit

Is there a café?

Yes, it runs as a community café and events space inside the tower.

Can we bring a picnic?

There's a picnic area on site if you'd rather bring your own food than use the café.

Do we need to book to visit?

There's no booking link listed, so it looks like a turn-up sort of place, though open days depend on volunteers being around.

What's the best time to visit for a proper look inside?

Heritage Open Days is when it opens up beyond the café, though hours can change or get cancelled at short notice if volunteers aren't available.
