What it’s like

Watch Jersey cows being milked and Highland calves up close, then feed the animals before ice cream in the tea room.

This is a working farm first and an ice cream shop second, and that's what makes it worth the detour. You can watch the Jersey cows being milked and get a proper look at the Highland cows and their calves, shaggy fringes and all. There's animal feeding too, so bring the kids close enough to actually see what a farm does, not just look at it through a fence.

Once you've done the rounds, the tea room and ice cream parlour is where you'll end up. It's open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:30am to 4:30pm, all year round, and there's no charge to get in, which makes it an easy one to add to a weekend without much planning. Dogs are welcome inside the tea room too, so you don't need to leave anyone in the car.

One thing to flag: picnics aren't allowed, though you can spread a blanket on the grass with an ice cream from the parlour, which feels like a fair swap given the whole point is trying their own ice cream. There's no booking system mentioned.
