What it’s like

A quarter-hour road train ride shuttling between the National Railway Museum and York Minster.

It does one job: it gets you from the National Railway Museum to York Minster (or back) without the walk, and it takes about fifteen minutes to do it. There's no commentary or scenery stop listed, just the journey itself, so treat it as transport with a bit of novelty rather than an attraction you build a day around.

It runs every 40 minutes from both ends, from 11.10am to 3.50pm, which gives you a decent window to fit it around whatever else you're doing in the museum or the city centre. You buy tickets from the guard on the day, £4 for a child and £5 for an adult, so there's nothing to sort in advance and nothing to forget to bring.

The rear carriage has a ramp for wheelchairs and buggies, but they're upfront about space not being guaranteed when it's busy, which is the one bit of forward planning worth doing if you're relying on it. Assistance and guide animals can travel too, at the guard's discretion. Worth noting the train doesn't run on the 21st or 22nd of September, so if your visit lands on either of those days you're walking between the museum and the Minster like everyone else.
