What it’s like

Forty acres to explore, plus a vast indoor play barn for when the fields turn to mud.

The animals are only half the day here. Yes, you can buy carrots at reception and go round feeding certain animals, but a lot of the time will get eaten up in the soft play barn, which the site says covers over 40,000 square feet across seven themed areas. That's a proper chunk of indoor space, so it's a decent bet if the forecast is against you.

Outside there's over 40 acres of parkland to get through, with zip wires, swings, slides, roundabouts, trampolines and ride-on tractors and go-carts scattered about. Tractor rides run from Easter through to autumn when the fields are dry enough, which is a fair enough condition given how much ground this place covers, but it does mean a soggy spring visit might miss out on that bit.

It suits ages one to eleven well, with the little ones happy feeding animals and pottering about, and the older ones heading straight for the go-carts and zip wires. Entry is £7 for a child and £8 for an adult, with under twos going free, and it's open every day except Christmas Day from 10am to 5pm. One thing to flag: it's card only, so don't turn up expecting to pay cash.

No pets are allowed beyond service dogs, which makes sense given how many small animals are wandering about, and footballs and rugby balls are banned too in case they spook anything. The site is wheelchair accessible, which is worth knowing if you've got a buggy or a wheelchair user in the group.
