What it’s like

Two hours of slot car racing for £10 on Monday nights, with a crash 'n' burn finale the kids will talk about all week.

Slot car racing, the Scalextric sort, on a proper track. Two hours of it for £10 on Monday evenings, 6.30 to 8.30, and the last 20 minutes is crash 'n' burn with the club Corvette party cars, which is the bit your kids will remember. There's a trophy for the winner and medals for second and third, and you can pay by card or cash when you arrive or by bank transfer beforehand.

The catch is the age. Six is the minimum to race, strictly, for parties as well as open sessions, so a five-year-old sibling is watching rather than driving. It's also a venue that only opens for booked events or that Monday session, which means you can't just wander in on a Saturday afternoon. Groups of more than four need agreeing in advance even on a Monday.

Parties come in four sizes: 90 minutes for up to 10 racers at £150, two hours for up to 15 at £180, two and a half hours for up to 20 at £210, and three hours for up to 24 at £240. No food is supplied at any of them, though they'll point you at pizza places and you order it during the party, not before. Drop the food break and you knock 30 minutes and £30 off the price. Extra medals are £2 on the day.

It's less than 150m from Northwood Hills on the Metropolitan line, which is a good deal easier than driving if you're anywhere near the tube. Note there are no open sessions in September, and October dates are still to be announced. Holiday clubs run too, but the site says they don't take phone enquiries about those or about open sessions.

Plan your visit

How much is an open session?

£10 for two hours of racing on a Monday evening. Pay by card, contactless or cash on arrival, or by bank transfer in advance.

Do we need to book?

Not for an open session. They run every Monday 6.30-8.30 p.m. and you can turn up. Groups of more than four do need agreeing in advance, though.

What's the minimum age?

Six, and they're firm about it. That applies to parties and events as much as open sessions.

Can we come and look round first?

Only on a Monday evening during the open session. There's no viewing while a private function or party is running.

What do the party packages cost?

£150 for 90 minutes and up to 10 racers, £180 for two hours and up to 15, £210 for two and a half hours and up to 20, or £240 for three hours and up to 24. Full payment secures the booking.

Is food included at parties?

No. They'll recommend pizza places and you order it during the party rather than in advance. Skip the food break and it's 30 minutes and £30 less.

How do we get there?

It's under 150m from Northwood Hills on the Metropolitan line. That's the venue, not the office address.

What happens in the last 20 minutes?

Crash 'n' burn with the club Corvette party cars. It's the loudest part of the evening.

Are there sessions in September?

No open sessions that month. October dates are to be announced.
