Barrowford
What it’s like
A walled garden, a bluebell woodland walk and the story of the Pendle witches, all on one heritage site in Barrowford.
Wander the 18th century walled garden first, with its box parterres clipped into neat shapes and the sort of historic planting that makes a nice contrast to the woodland walk waiting on the other side. That woodland walk leads through to the Bluebell Wood, which is obviously the one to time for spring if you can manage it, though the walk itself is worth doing whatever else is flowering.
The Pendle witches history is woven through the site, and it gives the visit a proper story to follow rather than just a garden to look at. Kids who like a spooky tale will get more out of this bit than the parterres, if we're honest.
It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, closed Mondays, with last entry at 3pm, so you can't roll up at half three expecting a full wander. The Tea Room does lunches and afternoon tea, which makes it easy to turn a couple of hours into most of a morning or afternoon without needing to plan around it.
