What it’s like
Free mornings among goats and vegetable beds, with a sandpit for the little ones and goat milking to watch if the timing's right.
This is a proper working city farm rather than a petting zoo dressed up for visitors. Kids get stuck into the animals, help out with hands-on growing sessions, and can even watch or take part in goat milking. There's a Saturday market where you pick fresh vegetables straight from the farm, which is a nice thing to do with a child who's never really connected a carrot to the ground it grew in.
For younger ones there's a sandpit and children's toys to fall back on if the animals lose their appeal after twenty minutes, which they might. It's free to get in, and it's open Friday and Saturday mornings only, 10am to 1pm, so this isn't a whole-day-out kind of visit. Plan around those hours rather than turning up on a whim midweek.
The site is wheelchair accessible and does on-site food, so you're not stuck bringing your own snacks if you time it around lunch. Group bookings and school visits are catered for too, which tells you it's set up to handle more than just a couple of families wandering through. If you want the outdoor area to yourselves, it hires out at £25 an hour with a three-hour minimum, sandpit and toys included, which could work for a low-key birthday outdoors.
There's an Autumn Festival on Saturday 3rd October, worth building a visit around if you're free that day. Otherwise it's the quieter charm of a small working farm: goats, growing, and a Saturday market that gives the whole thing a proper reason to exist beyond looking at animals.
