What it’s like
Free wander round a marsh reserve with mown paths, dragonflies and birds to spot, and no set route to stick to.
There's no entry fee and no ticket to book, you just turn up and walk. The paths are mown through the reserve so you can wander at whatever pace your kids set, stopping wherever the dragonflies or butterflies catch someone's eye. It's the sort of open-ended visit where a three-year-old who wants to stop every ten steps to look at a puddle is fine, and so is a nine-year-old who wants to march the whole loop.
Birds and seasonal wildlife are the main draw, and the site runs family events and guided walks too if you'd rather have someone point things out than go it alone. There's no set visit length, people just stay as long as it holds their attention, which for a good nature walk can be surprisingly long.
The catch is parking. There isn't any on site, so you're looking at a walk from Sloughbottom Park, Hellesdon Road Riverside Walk or Hellesdon Mill, all 400 to 600 metres off. Wear proper waterproof footwear too, the terrain is uneven and this isn't a place for trainers on a wet day. Access work is planned from December 2025.
It's step free and pushchair friendly, and dogs can come along on a lead. If you live locally or money's tight, there are free community tickets for events, no questions asked, which is a nice touch you don't often see.
