What it’s like

Free woodland park with ponds, an old ice house to spot and minibeast hunts for anyone who likes poking about outdoors.

There's no ticket to buy and no gate to queue at, just woodland, a couple of secluded ponds and enough space to let a walk turn into a wander. The site lists talks, displays and searches for minibeasts as regular activities, so it's not just a case of turning up and hoping for the best. There's a storytelling circle too, which is the sort of low-key thing that suits a group of small kids who've already decided the walk itself is boring.

The ice house is the bit worth saving until last. It's tucked away in the woodland and gives younger kids a proper "what's that then" moment once they clock it's not just another shed. Wildlife watching happens naturally as you go, ponds and woodland edges being what they are, and dogs are allowed on leads if you're bringing one along on the walk.

The one real catch is there are no toilets on site, which matters more with a toddler than anyone would like to admit. Pack accordingly, bring a picnic since that's allowed, and factor in that this is a proper outdoor visit rather than a five-minute stop. Parking is free, which takes the sting out of a visit that costs nothing anyway.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Nothing. It's free entry and free parking too, so the only spend is whatever you bring with you.

Do we need to book ahead?

There's no booking link listed, so it looks like you can just turn up.

Are there toilets?

No toilets on site, which is the one thing to sort before you leave the house, especially with small kids.

Can we bring the dog?

Dogs are welcome as long as they're kept on leads, given the wildlife and ponds around.

What will the kids actually do there?

Wander the woodland, spot the ice house, hunt for minibeasts and take in whatever talks or displays are on that day.
