What it’s like

A 3.5 mile fell walk near Preston with reservoir views, a trig point summit and a proper sense of achievement for small legs.

This one's a there-and-back walk up to a fell summit, past Grizedale Reservoir and along the brook before the climb proper starts. The site rates it easy, with 187 metres of ascent over the full 3.5 miles, so it's a manageable outing rather than a scramble. The pay-off at the top is the view: across to the Isle of Man and the Lakeland Fells one way, Bowland and the West Pennines the other, plus a trig point to touch and photograph.

Budget an hour and a half to two hours for the whole thing. It's not a long walk by fell standards, but with kids stopping to poke at the reservoir edge or catch their breath on the steps up to the summit, it'll stretch a bit. There's no visitor centre or café built into the walk itself.

Parking is free at the foot of the fell, postcode PR3 1BA if you're driving over. Dogs are welcome but need to stay on the lead the whole way, which is fair enough given the reservoir and any grazing you might pass. If you fancy food after, the Priory in Scorton is the pub the site points you towards, and it also does rooms if you're making a weekend of it.
