What it’s like

Learn a full meal from a refugee or migrant chef, then sit down and eat it together, though it's an over-14s class rather than a kids' activity.

This one is for teenagers and adults rather than younger children. Over 2.5 hours you cook a full meal alongside a refugee or migrant chef teaching their own family recipes, then everyone sits down and eats what they've made together. It's hands-on rather than a demonstration, so you're chopping, stirring and plating it up yourselves.

Fourteen is the minimum age, and anyone under 18 has to come with an adult who's booked their own ticket too, so this suits a food-curious teenager brought along by a parent rather than a family outing with younger kids. Classes run from £45, which puts it in treat territory rather than a regular Saturday plan, but that covers the full session and the meal at the end.

One thing worth knowing before you book: they can't remove or substitute ingredients for allergies or dietary requirements in the public classes, so if anyone in your group has a restriction this might not be the one. The venue also isn't fully wheelchair accessible, though there is an accessible toilet and step-free access into the building. Parking is straightforward, at least, with free on-street spaces nearby and a two-minute walk to unrestricted parking at Windmill Hill during the day.

Dates are published four to eight weeks ahead, and there's no waitlist if a class sells out, so if you've got your eye on a particular date it pays to book as soon as it appears rather than wait and hope.

How much does it cost?

Classes start from £45 per person, covering the 2.5-hour session and the meal you cook together at the end.

Can younger children come along?

The minimum age is 14, and anyone aged 14 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult who has their own ticket.

Do we need to book in advance?

Booking is required and there's no waitlist if a class sells out, so it's best to grab a date as soon as it's published.

Can you cater for allergies or dietary requirements?

Ingredients can't be removed or substituted in the public classes, and they can't guarantee any class is free of a specific ingredient.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

Not fully. There's step-free access into the building and an accessible toilet, but the venue can't guarantee the full class experience for wheelchair users.

Is there parking nearby?

Free on-street parking is generally available near the venue, and daytime visitors can park free at Windmill Hill, about a two-minute walk away.
