Derby

What it’s like

Free wander round a working marina with a sculpture trail, canal boat trips and enough water to keep small kids gawping.

There's no entry fee here, which changes the maths on a day out. You turn up, park free, and let the kids loose on a sculpture trail and nature walks around the marina without spending a penny before lunch. It suits a slow morning more than a big adrenaline hit: boats bobbing about, paths to run along, things to spot along the water.

The canal boat trips are the bit that'll actually get talked about in the car home. It's a proper working marina rather than a themed attraction built for children, so don't expect play equipment or a soft play fallback if the weather turns. What you get instead is space, water, and a landscape that's genuinely nicer to walk round than most car parks pretending to be a destination.

Food won't be the problem. Between the cafés, restaurants and independent spots dotted round the marina front, you can stretch a free morning into a proper afternoon without driving anywhere else. It's an easy one to bolt onto another Derby trip since it costs nothing to pop in, even if you only manage an hour before nap time or dinner derails you.

Check what's on before you go if you want more than the trail and the boats. There are events and activities through the year, so a random Tuesday and a festival weekend will feel like different places.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost to get in?

Nothing. It's free entry and free parking, so the only spend is on food or a boat trip.

Do we need to book anything?

There's no booking link listed, so it reads as turn up and see what's on.

Is it open every day?

Open seven days a week, so it's a decent option for a spontaneous weekday visit.

What's there to eat?

Three cafés, two restaurants and some independent cafés dotted round the marina front, so you've got choice without leaving the site.

Is there anything for older kids to do, or is it just walking?

Boat trips on the canal and a sculpture trail give it more shape than a plain walk, plus events and activities run through the year.
