What it’s like

Climb aboard rows of historic double-deckers and, at weekends and holidays, actually ride one on the road.

This is a proper hands-on transport museum rather than a look-but-don't-touch one. Kids can board at least one of the display buses (stewards permitting), handle artefacts, and wander among more than 150 years of London's public transport history. The one bit they can't do is get into the driver's cab, which is fair enough on safety grounds but worth flagging before a seven-year-old sets their heart on it.

The proper highlight is the heritage bus ride on the road, running weekends and Surrey school holidays, about 20 minutes long. It's £3 for an adult and £1 for a child on top of admission, booked at the Shillibeer Place shop, so budget a few extra quid and don't assume it's included. Under-16s need close adult supervision throughout, and the old buses don't have seat-belts, which is just how heritage vehicles are.

Admission isn't cheap: booking online in advance saves you a bit versus turning up on the day, and a family visit adds up quickly at over £25 for an adult. What softens that is your ticket also gets you into Brooklands Museum next door, so it's really two visits for one price. There's no café inside the bus museum itself, but Brooklands has the Sunbeam Cafe and a picnic area a short walk away, open to everyone.

The museum is flat with a ramped entrance and a lift to the mezzanine, wheelchairs and mobility scooters are welcome, and there's a buggy park just inside the door. Parking's free on site. Last entry is 4pm to the bus museum itself, a bit earlier if you're heading into Brooklands first, and it's card payment only for admission so leave the cash at home.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Adults are around £24-27 depending on season and whether you book online, kids aged 4-17 are about £10-11. Booking online in advance is a bit cheaper than paying on the day.

Do we need to book in advance?

General admission doesn't need booking, but the bus ride seats do, at the Shillibeer Place shop. School parties need to book at least a month ahead.

Can kids get on the buses?

Usually at least one display bus is open to board, subject to a steward being free. The driver's cab is off limits for safety.

What about the bus ride itself?

It runs at weekends and during Surrey school holidays, about 20 minutes on the road, £3 for an adult and £1 for a child on top of your entry ticket.

Is it OK for younger children?

The listed age range starts at 4, and under-16s must be closely supervised by an adult at all times, especially around the buses.

Is there anywhere to eat?

No café inside the bus museum, but Brooklands Museum next door has the Sunbeam Cafe and a picnic area, open to everyone.

Is parking free?

Parking on site is free.

Is it accessible for wheelchairs and buggies?

The museum is flat with a ramped entrance and a lift to the mezzanine, and wheelchairs and mobility scooters are welcome. There's a buggy park just inside the entrance too.

What time is last entry?

4pm into the London Bus Museum itself, 3pm if you're going in through the Brooklands main entrance.

Does our ticket cover anything else?

One admission fee gets you into both London Bus Museum and Brooklands Museum next door.

Can we pay by cash?

Admission is card only, so bring a card rather than relying on cash.

Is the museum ever closed unexpectedly?

It can occasionally close on days when volunteer staffing is short, so it's worth ringing ahead if you're travelling a long way.
