What it’s like

Free Rhythm and Rhyme sessions, storytime and Lego building sessions for kids, plus book borrowing, in a library with disabled parking and a hearing loop.

This is a proper working library rather than a big event space, and that's part of the appeal if you've got a small child who just wants to potter about the shelves without being rushed. Rhythm and Rhyme sessions run for the 0 to 4 crowd, storytime is pitched at 4 to 8 year olds, and there's Lego and Duplo building for ages 4 to 10, so you can time your visit around whichever one suits the child you've brought.

Hours are a bit of a puzzle to work around. Wednesday is the long day, open until 8pm, but Thursday and Saturday are short mornings only. Worth checking which session lands on which day before you plan a trip around a specific activity.

It's all free, which counts for a lot when you've got more than one child wanting a go at the Lego table. There's a disabled toilet, baby changing, a hearing loop and a public lift, plus parking with disabled spaces. It's shut on the big Christmas and New Year dates, otherwise it's business as usual.

Don't expect a café or anything to eat, this is books and building bricks rather than a day out with lunch included. But for a wet Wednesday afternoon with a toddler, or a Saturday morning before the library shuts at 1pm, it does the job without costing you anything.
