What it’s like

A free BMX track and skate park inside Beckenham Place Park, with playgrounds and a swimming lake to fill the rest of the day.

The BMX track and skate park sit inside Beckenham Place Park, so once the bikes and boards are done there's a swimming lake and a couple of playgrounds to wander over to. It's a big site, so pack for a proper stretch of the day rather than a quick half hour on the ramps.

Getting in costs nothing, which is the main selling point here. The car park is the bit that'll catch you out: it's £4 a car, pay on the day, and the site itself admits it fills up fast on weekends, so an early start saves the faff of circling for a space. There are 108 spaces including 6 blue badge bays and electric charging points, plus bike racks dotted around if you've cycled in.

Two cafés cover food. The Homestead Café does takeaway pastries, pizza and ice cream, while the Mansion Café & Bar is more of a sit-down job with brunch and sharing boards, and both do coffee and beer for the adults. Food trucks turn up for events too. Picnics are allowed if you'd rather bring your own and find a spot on the grass.

Toilets are step-free with a disabled toilet and baby changing table, based in the Homestead Courtyard, though the hours shift with the season. Worth knowing if you're planning a birthday gathering in the park: cars can't go on the grass, and they ask you skip foil confetti and helium balloons since they end up stuck in the trees.
