Knowle Bowling Club
WHERE
Bristol
What it’s like
A six-rink outdoor bowls green where kids can have a go at lawn bowls in the open air.
The green itself is the whole point here: six rinks of outdoor lawn bowls, which is a slower, more fiddly game than it looks from the clubhouse window. Getting a wood anywhere near the jack takes a surprising amount of patience, and that's not a bad thing for a kid who needs to learn it. It won't hold a toddler's attention for long, but for an older child who likes a proper game with rules and a bit of tactics, it's got more to it than a quick roll down a lane.
There's food on site, which helps if you're making a proper visit of it rather than nipping in for one end and leaving. No on-site parking is the one real catch. You'll want to use the Knowle Cricket Club car park on Broadwalk nearby, which is fine if you know to look for it but a faff if you turn up expecting a car park out front.
It's not a big flashy attraction and there's nothing here beyond the green and the food, so treat it as a straightforward afternoon of outdoor bowls rather than a day out with lots to do.
