What it’s like

A guided tour through 2,000 years of history, Roman times to the Industrial Revolution, with free grounds to wander outside.

The interior only opens up for a guided tour, and those only run on Saturdays through the summer. Get the timing wrong and you'll be looking at the outside of the house, which is free and needs no booking, but that spiral staircase and the two steps into the ground floor stay firmly out of reach.

When you do get on a tour, it covers a proper stretch of history under one roof, from Roman occupation through to the Industrial Revolution. That's a lot of ground for a small child to hold onto, but it's the sort of thing that clicks with an older kid who's just done the Romans at school. Booking is online in advance, no turning up on spec for the tour itself.

At £7.50 for an adult and £6 for concessions, it's not a cheap way to spend a Saturday, and you'll want to book ahead since spaces are ticketed. There's limited parking in the estate and it's free, which helps soften the blow a bit.

One thing to plan around: there are no public toilets on site. The nearest is at the library in Bo'ness, so sort that out before you arrive rather than mid-tour.
