What it’s like
Free arts sessions for under-fives, garden volunteering and a teen lounge, all in a grand old house with a car park that fills up fast.
This one's less "attraction" and more community house that happens to run genuinely useful stuff for families. The early years offer is the headline: free arts workshops for parents with children aged nought to four, so if you've got a toddler who likes glue and glitter more than you do, this is worth the trip. There's also a community garden that takes volunteers on Thursday mornings, which is a nice one if you fancy getting a small child's hands dirty for a good reason.
Older kids get a look in too, with a community lounge for teenagers that comes with dessert thrown in, which is a small but sensible bribe to get them through the door.
It's free entry, which is rare enough these days to mention twice. The building itself is a grand old house, and that shows in the practicalities: the ground floor is ramped and accessible, but the upper floors are steps only, no lift, so a buggy or wheelchair is stuck downstairs. Parking on site is genuinely tight, they say the estate is usually full, and there's a schools street restriction on weekday mornings and afternoons that blocks driving nearby anyway. Train's the easier option, with Sydenham Hill close by and Gipsy Hill a ten minute walk.
