What it’s like

Glamping by a quiet lake near Driffield, with kayaking, adventure golf and beach trips at Flamborough close by.

This is a stay-in-a-tent-by-a-lake sort of place, not a day trip, and that changes what you do with the kids while you're there. The lake itself is off limits for swimming (it's 20ft deep in parts with fallen trees under the surface, so no messing about) but you can hire one of their hard-shell kayaks and get out on the water that way, which is really the main event. There's a lakeside trail to stroll, adventure golf and foot golf on site, and from what they say the beach at Flamborough and its rockpools are close enough for a day out mid-stay.

The glamping tents share underfloor-heated washrooms, which is a nice touch when you've got wet-suited kids traipsing back and forth. Kayak hire starts at £45 for a 2-3 night stay and it's worth adding it on when you book, since numbers are kept limited to keep the lake peaceful rather than turned into a flotilla. You can't bring your own paddleboard or firepit, but they'll hire you a firepit and logs package for the same £45 if an evening by the fire is part of the plan.

Wifi is patchy enough that they suggest downloading anything you want to watch before you arrive, and 4G covers the gaps well enough for most things. It's rural, with no public transport actually passing the site, so you're driving in or getting a taxi from Beverley station. Quiet hours run 10pm to 8am and sound travels a long way across water.

Check-in is from 4pm in summer and 3pm the rest of the year, and you're asked to leave by 10am (12 on Sundays), which is generous enough not to feel rushed on the last morning. Brandesburton village is a three-minute drive for a well-stocked store, a chip shop and a proper bistro called Bert's.

Plan your visit

Can the kids swim in the lake?

No, swimming isn't allowed anywhere on the lakes because of the very deep water and submerged trees. Kayaking is the way to get out on the water instead.

Do we need to book kayak hire in advance?

It's best to add it at booking or let them know before you arrive, since kayak numbers are kept limited to keep the lake peaceful. It starts from £45 for a 2-3 night stay.

Can we bring our own paddleboard or firepit?

Neither is allowed, for safety and insurance reasons. They hire out a firepit and logs package instead, also from £45 for a 2-3 night stay.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is from 4pm May to August and 3pm the rest of the year. Check-out is 10am, or midday on Sundays.

Is there anywhere to eat nearby?

Brandesburton village is a three minute drive and has a well-stocked store, a Budgens, a chip shop, a Chinese takeaway, two pubs and a bistro called Bert's.

Is there wifi and phone signal on site?

4G works well around the site and each lodge has its own wifi, but they suggest downloading films or podcasts beforehand as streaming isn't reliable.

Is the site accessible for wheelchairs?

There's an accessible tent, Hare's Hideout Safari Tent, with ramp access and a Doc-M accessible bathroom with a permanent ramp.
