Joy Choir
WHERE
Leeds
What it’s like
An adults' choir with no auditions, weekly rehearsals and the option of a monthly one-to-one singing lesson.
This one's for the grown-ups. Joy Choir runs weekly rehearsals singing contemporary songs, and there's no audition to get in, so you don't need to read music or have sung a note since school. Nobody's put on the spot for a solo either, everyone learns their part together, which takes the pressure off if you're coming along nervous about your voice.
Membership is £30.75 a month for weekly rehearsals, guest workshops and access to the Members' Area, or £50.90 a month if you want a one-to-one singing lesson thrown in as well. That's a proper monthly commitment rather than a one-off ticket. Performances are optional, though if you fancy it there are gigs at local events and the Christmas Concert at Leeds Minster to aim for.
The no-audition policy is honest about its trade-off: you'll be rehearsing alongside a real mix of ability, from people who've sung for years to people who haven't. If you miss a week your membership just carries on, and you can catch up with the live stream or practice tracks at home. Going alone isn't really a barrier either, singing in parts means you're working closely with whoever's next to you from the first rehearsal.
