What it’s like
Free Thursday-night stargazing through telescopes, with a fixed dome scope alongside portable ones you can look through outside.
Turn up on a Thursday evening once it's dark and you can look through telescopes for nothing. There's a fixed dome telescope on site, but if that's not accessible for you (it's up stairs), there are other telescopes set up on the grounds instead, so nobody's left just looking at the building.
It only opens the one night a week, from 8pm onwards, so this isn't a spontaneous afternoon stop. Whether it's worth the trip depends on the season too: they're upfront that October to March is the best stretch, since summer skies round here don't go properly dark until late, which rather defeats the point of a telescope.
There's no café or toilets on site, so plan around that if you're staying a while or bringing kids who'll need a loo. Parking is free and there's room for about 20 cars, which should cover most Thursdays, but if you're coming as a group of more than six they ask you to get in touch first since it can get busy.
Wheelchair users can get around the grounds fine, and having non-dome telescopes available means the whole visit isn't dependent on stairs. It's a straightforward, free evening out for anyone curious about the night sky, just one that needs a bit of planning around darkness and daylight hours rather than a normal opening timetable.
