What it’s like

Sock-only soft play in Dalkeith with a hot food restaurant, a café, and two free adult entries with every child booking.

Shoes come off at the door here, no exceptions, and if you turn up without socks you'll be buying a pair. That's a small faff but it keeps the frame clean, and staff are there to look after the equipment while you're on parent duty watching your own crew.

There's no fixed session to book into. You can just walk up and pay whenever you like, though they're upfront that booking online is the way to guarantee a spot if you want certainty over spontaneity. Each child's ticket brings two adults in free, with any extra grown-ups paying £8 on the door, which is a decent setup if grandad's tagging along too. Babies under six months get in free.

Food is sorted on site with a proper hot food restaurant and a café, so you're not stuck eating a soggy sandwich from your bag. That's because outside food isn't allowed inside House of Fun at all, baby food and specific dietary needs aside, and nothing gets eaten in the playframe itself. Worth knowing before you pack a picnic out of habit.

Parking's on street or in the St Andrews Street car park just behind, which is free for the first hour. If you're planning a birthday, there are three themed parties (Jungle, Princess and Pirate) with two hours of play and a kids' meal included, though you'll need at least ten children and to cancel more than four weeks out if plans change, or you lose half the cost.
