What it’s like

Vintage steam-powered fairground rides, a big wheel and old-school games set up for one weekend only in Arundel.

Proper vintage fairground stuff here, not the flashing-lights modern kind. The Steam Gallopers and Kings Lynn Gallopers are the ones to head for first, all brass and paintwork, plus a Chair O Planes and a Lightning Skid for anyone after a bit more speed. There's a Big Wheel for the view over the rest of the fair, a run of children's rides for smaller ones, and games and goodies stalls if you fancy a go at winning something daft.

It's free to get in, which is the bit that makes this an easy yes. Rides are token-based rather than pay-on-the-door, and buying the token bundles online ahead of time saves money and gets you past the queues, so it's worth sorting before you go rather than at the gate. Saturday runs midday to 10pm and Sunday midday to 8pm, giving you a proper stretch of time to work through the rides without feeling rushed.

Parking on site is limited, and they're upfront about it, so the Route 8 bus is the better bet if you can manage it, especially on the Saturday when the fair runs later into the evening. Everything's ADIPS tested annually with daily safety checks on top, and there's £10 million public liability insurance covering the equipment, which is the sort of thing you don't think about until you're stood next to a hundred-year-old ride.
