What it’s like
Walk an alpaca round a field in Crosspool and feed the pigs, sheep and ducks while you're at it, but you'll need to book ahead.
This is a farm you book into rather than turn up at, and the whole visit runs around an hour and a half. You meet the alpacas and a llama, get stuck into feeding pigs, sheep, ducks and chickens, then walk an alpaca round the field on a lead, which is the bit that'll stick in a small kid's memory long after the ducks are forgotten. There's a guided tour through the vegetable and forest gardens too, so it's not just animals, there's a proper look at how the place actually grows things.
It's £9 for an adult and £5 for a child, and you pay when you book rather than on the day, which feels like a faff until you realise it's how they keep the group small enough to actually manage, capped at 25. No drop-ins, no phoning it in with a card either, it's online or bank transfer only. Guides turn up twenty minutes before the trek starts to get the alpacas ready, and if you're earlier than that the gate might still be locked.
The ground is proper farm terrain, uneven and often muddy, so wellies or sturdy boots and a waterproof are the sensible call rather than the trainers your kids will want to wear. A pushchair can come with you and get parked in the top meadow while you're doing the encounter, but it's not going to survive the rest of the site. Wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility will struggle here, there are no surfaced paths or handrails and the tracks are properly rocky in places.
Parking is free and on-street along Long Lane, and it's worth parking uphill of the gate rather than down. Sat navs apparently send people to the wrong farm entirely. Light rain won't stop a trek, but heavy rain, ice or high winds will, and they'll warn you the day before or by 9am on the day if it's off.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
£9 for an adult, £5 for a child. You pay in full when you book, not on arrival.
Do we need to book ahead?
Yes, there's no turning up on spec. Book and pay online or by bank transfer, no card payments over the phone.
How long does a visit take?
Around an hour and a half from meeting the animals to the alpaca walk and garden tour.
Is it suitable for a toddler or a pushchair?
Toddlers are fine, there's no minimum age. A pushchair can come along but gets left in the top meadow for most of the encounter, since the ground's too uneven for it elsewhere.
Is there parking?
Free on-street parking on Long Lane, near the Holly Hagg gate. Park uphill of the gate rather than below it.
What happens if it's raining?
Light rain doesn't cancel a trek, but heavy rain, ice or high winds do. They send a warning the day before or by 9am if it's off, with a refund or a rebook.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
The tracks are uneven and rocky with no surfaced paths or handrails, so it's not suitable for limited mobility.
What time should we get there?
Turn up shortly before your trek starts. Guides arrive twenty minutes early to get the alpacas ready, and if you're too early the gate may still be locked.
Can friends who haven't booked come along?
They can come and meet the animals before the trek starts, but they can't join the trek itself for safety reasons.
