What it’s like
Free entry to see rescued shire horses and other sanctuary animals, open daily except Saturdays.
Rescued shire horses are the main draw here, big gentle animals that have mostly had a rough start before landing somewhere safer. There's no set trail or show to catch, you just wander round and see who's out and about, which suits a slow morning better than a tightly timed one.
Entry costs nothing, which is unusual for anywhere with animals this size to feed and look after, and it makes it easy to pop in for half an hour rather than committing to a full day out. There's a café on site if you want to make more of it, and a gift shop for the inevitable "can I get something" on the way out. Dogs are welcome on a lead, so it doesn't have to be a choice between the horses and the dog walk.
The one thing to plan around is the closing day. It runs from the end of March to the end of October, open 10am to 5pm every day except Saturdays, with Easter Saturday as the single exception where it does open. Get the day right and it's a properly relaxed visit, no ticket to book, no time slot to hit.
