What it’s like

Morning dance sessions for under-fives, plus family shows, comedy and theatre in a small arts centre with free parking.

Boogie in the Barn is the one to know about if you've got a small child who likes dancing more than sitting still. It's a movement and music session for under-fives, with nursery rhymes, ribbons, parachutes and bubbles thrown in, and it's £3 for your first child and £2 for the second, so bringing a sibling along doesn't cost much more.

Beyond that, the centre puts on live shows across music, comedy and theatre, and tickets for general events start around £2. There's a discount for over 60s and under 16s too. If you're after a specific evening out, do book ahead, since seats go on a first come first served basis and don't just show up if you've sponsored one, as sponsorship doesn't guarantee your seat's free at every performance.

Worth knowing before you plan a visit: the place is only open Monday to Friday, 9:30 to 5, unless there's a show on, in which case it opens an hour before curtain. That rules out a casual Saturday drop-in, so check what's scheduled if you're thinking of a weekend trip. Some of the shows use haze, smoke effects or strobe lighting, which is worth bearing in mind if that's a concern for your child.

Parking's free and on site, there's a café for a coffee between sessions, and the building's fully accessible with level access, a lift for the backstage stairs and an accessible toilet near the entrance. If you're coming by train, Totton station is about two miles off, roughly a thirty minute walk, so driving is the easier option for most families.

Plan your visit

How much does Boogie in the Barn cost?

£3 for your first child, £2 for a second. It's a movement and music session for under-fives with singing, ribbons and bubbles.

Is the centre open at weekends?

Not usually. It's closed Saturday and Sunday unless there's a show scheduled, opening an hour before the start time on those days.

Do we need to book ahead for shows?

Booking early is sensible since seats are first come, first served, even if you've sponsored one.

Are there any discounts?

Over 60s and under 16s get concessions, and registered carers get £10 off tickets. Individual shows may list further discounts.

Is there parking on site?

Yes, and it's free, with blue badge spaces available too.

Is the venue accessible?

There's level access throughout, a wheelchair lift for the backstage stairs, and an accessible toilet between the auditorium and main entrance.

What about the shows, are they suitable for everyone?

Some productions use haze, smoke effects or strobe lighting, so it's something to check if your child is sensitive to that.
