What it’s like

Harness up for high ropes and zip lines through Grinlow Woods above Buxton, built for ages 10 and up.

This is the Treetop Challenge: a high ropes course strung through the trees at Grinlow Woods, with zip lines and a Tarzan Swing worked in along the way. It's aimed squarely at ages 10 and up, and there's a minimum height of 1.4m, so it's not one for younger siblings to tag along on.

It's £36.95 a head and they want you booked ahead of time, though the site mentions walk-ups at the cabin if a slot's free. Bring as little as possible with you. The storage at the cabin isn't secure, so wallets and phones are at your own risk while you're up in the canopy.

There's no toilet out on the course itself, so get that sorted at the Pooles Cavern visitor centre before you clip in. That's also where you'll find the café for drinks and light meals afterwards, plus the shop if anyone fancies a souvenir. The car park is pay and display, shared with the visitor centre, and Blue Badge holders park free.

Paths around the site are gravel and slope in places, which the site flags as tricky underfoot in wet weather. Dogs can come along on a lead for the woodland walks, though they can't join you on the actual course. Thick ice, thunderstorms or gales will shut the whole thing down, so a howling gale is one way to lose your deposit's worth of adrenaline.
