What it’s like

Free exhibitions of paintings, photography and ceramics, plus a children's art competition and summer lunchtime concerts.

Wander round changing displays of paintings, photography and ceramics without paying a penny to get in. It's a small local arts centre rather than a big gallery, so a visit is more of a half hour browse than an all-day outing, but that's no bad thing if you've got a child whose attention span matches.

The children's art competition is the bit worth building a visit around if your kids like making things themselves rather than just looking. Over summer there are free Thursday lunchtime concerts too, which is a nice reason to time your visit around, especially if you fancy sitting down with a brew afterwards. The café does refreshments, so there's a proper stop built into the trip rather than just a quick look round and out.

Opening hours are on the tight side. It's open Tuesday and Thursday mornings and afternoons, but Saturdays it's just the morning, closing at half twelve. There's no booking involved.
