What it’s like
A regimental history museum at the Barracks in Preston, where you'll need to book your slot two days ahead.
This is a museum you have to plan for rather than just turn up to. It's open Friday and Saturday only, 10am to 4pm, and every visitor has to prebook at least two working days ahead. Skip that step and the site is blunt about it: security can turn you away at the gate.
Once you're through, there's a bit of ceremony to it. You head to the Guardroom first for your personal visitor pass before you're allowed into the museum proper, which feels fitting for a place inside an army barracks. Adults pay £6, kids aged 11 to 16 and concessions are £4, and if you've prebooked, that ticket gets you unlimited return visits for a whole year, so it's worth treating as an annual pass rather than a one-off.
There isn't much here for younger children on the facts available, and the strict booking rule alone makes this feel geared towards an older, more deliberate visit rather than a spontaneous family afternoon. If you do have a group of ten or so, guided tours can be arranged for up to 20 people during normal hours, or as a weekday evening visit, with a supper and tour option at £15 a head including entry.
Parking's free on site at the Barracks, which is one less thing to worry about, and if you're coming by public transport the number 19 bus from Preston Central runs every five minutes.
